Artist’s Statement

For as long as I can remember, I have been drawn to how things fit together, in life and in the natural world. I am fascinated by the “law of compensation” as it plays out in nature: in opposites such as light and dark, quiet and active, high and low. I’ve always looked for balance and symmetry, and the right proportion in everything. Maybe I have some kind of aesthetic sense imparted to me by my Swedish ancestors. Or could it just have to do with being born under the sign of Libra? Who knows? But it is the overwhelming drive behind my pursuits in the studio.

To create abstract paintings that resolve problems of design and composition gives me a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment. I try to find a balance through the interaction of positive and negative spaces and to resolve the paradox between order and invention. Forms reduced to their sparest most meaningful existence are counterpoised in dynamic relationships. Color-blocks, organized within the perimeters of the canvas, create a spatial community. Within the completed work, there is a sense of resolution as the forms and colors echo each other. All of the elements come together for a visual experience that is shared with the viewer – a two-dimensional version of a more tangible reality.

Biography

A native of Minneapolis, Carole Stodder came to the Chicago area to attend Lake Forest College where she graduated with Honors in Art. Her development as a painter was influenced by a graduate course with New York artist Will Barnet, well-known for his classical approach to abstract painting. Settled in Chicago as an art teacher at the University of Chicago Laboratory School, she continued her art studies at the University of Chicago, where she earned a Master of Fine Arts Degree. As an activist in the 70’s, she was a founding member of the Chicago Artists’ Coalition and worked as editor of the Chicago Artists’ News. She continued to paint and exhibit her work widely as part of the art community in Chicago with an art studio in the West Loop, and she worked as an Arts Administrator for the Illinois Artisans Program throughout the 90s.

In 1996, she moved to Indiana where she now maintains a studio in the Town of Pines. She has continued her involvement with the art community as an active member of the Area Artists Association and the Lubeznik Center for the Arts in Michigan City. She has had a number of one-person exhibits including the Brauer Museum of Art at Valparaiso University, the Lubeznik Center for the Arts in Michigan City, the Marshall Gardner Center in Miller Beach, and the Center for Visual and Performing Arts in Munster. As an award winning artist, her works have appeared in juried shows in Elkhart, Munster, and Michigan City, Indiana, as well as in art centers in Illinois, Michigan and Minnesota. Her work is represented in both private and public collections.
